Exit external Teams as Guest

Microsoft Teams casino

Over the past 6 years, I have been granted Guest access to many Teams that spanned #MVP activities and #Microsoft consultancies. However, leaving them is like being in a casino with no doors or windows!

As a Guest, you’re at the mercy of the Team owners. You can’t leave via the Teams client if the option isn’t enabled. Old Teams can linger in your interface long after they’re no longer relevant, cluttering your navigation and mental bandwidth. As a tidy person, this has bugged me for years. Now and then, I try to leave using various links, but fail. I felt foolish to ask as I thought everyone might know except me. However, I should know by now that there are no stupid questions!

To remove yourself from old Teams where you’re a Guest, try:

  1. Microsoft Teams Web Portal Go to https://teams.microsoft.com → Select the organization you want to leave from your profile icon at the top right → Then click Leave Organization.
  2. Azure AD Portal (If Needed) Sometimes, Teams membership is tied to external orgs via Azure AD. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations and remove yourself from guest directories.
  3. Contact the Admin If you’re blocked from leaving, you might need to ask an admin of the external organisation to remove your account manually. I HAD TO DO THIS WITH FIVE OF THEM by opening the Team and creating a Chat that said: “Please remove my access from your tenant”. After a few days (years!) I safely escaped.

See my LinkedIn comments as this was not a stupid question after all! And this was raised on the Microsoft Tech Community two year ago.
